On the 22nd of August 2021, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, through its Public Relations Officer, Chika Gladys Ene, released a press release on the death of Mr David Ogbonna, a 200L student of Industrial Physics who died on the 20th of August 2021, in the school’s hostel.
The deceased was reportedly found in a wardrobe inside his hostel room where he allegedly committed suicide with a shoelace. According to eyewitnesses at the venue, he allegedly took his own life after removing his clothes and making his phone accessible.
The University’s medical centre and the Nigerian Police Force have intervened as necessary and have moved the body to the mortuary.
The reason for his death is still not known as a thorough investigation is still ongoing by the management and NPF to uncover the cause.
According to the report released by the school management, the rumour that he died because of the school fees hike was debunked by his parents, Pastor and Mrs Ogbonna, who have said that they have always been up to the task of providing for their late son. The deceased’s siblings, also graduates of the university, have confirmed the family’s ability to pay the fees. Additionally, the parents noted that their late son was hardworking and runs a laundry service to support himself, further refuting financial problems as being the cause of his death.
In the memo, the management of the university advised the students to visit the school’s Guidance and Counselling Unit for mental health and all-around support.
