The Students’ Union Bar Association of the University of Ilorin has inaugurated a new set of executives, who are to direct the affairs of the organisation for the 2021/2022 academic session. The inauguration, which was conducted at the Bakery Restaurant, University of Ilorin, was held on Wednesday, 2nd of June, 2021.
The event tagged: the “Bar Hangout and Transition Ceremony,” had interactions, recommendations and advice from the graduating advocates as well as thematic discussions on how advocacy can be improved on campus.
The Students’ Union Bar Association at the University of Ilorin is an organisation of student legal practitioners, understanding legal practice and procedures in student law courts domiciled in the University of Ilorin campus. The organisation styles itself as the largest and the most prestigious student bar in Nigeria, with a reputation for building many practitioners now working with top-tier law firms in Nigeria. It states that it is “committed to uplifting the bars of advocacy, jurisprudence and activism in the University environs.”
The inauguration ushered in Adedimeji Quayyim as the Executive President, while Abdul-Kareem Hajarah, Okwara Lawrence, Precious Onuabuchi and Prisca Jaiyeoba emerged as the Vice President, Registrar, Director of Finance and Director of Information respectively.
The event also witnessed the presentation of certificates of merit to distinguished student advocates and the outgoing executives of the Bar. The event had the presence of key experts and professionals of legal practice on campus, who all lent words towards the upliftment of law practice on campus.
The outgoing president of the organisation, Omopupa Muhammed Awwal, expressed his deepest gratitude to the advocates for the support to the administration, and to the University community for their reception towards legal practice on campus. He advised that the new executives should continue to push the mantle forward, in ensuring that the goals of the organisation are met.
The newly inaugurated president, Adedimeji Quayyim, who spoke on behalf of the newly inaugurated executive council, expressed his appreciation to the advocates for considering them to be worthy of service and promised that the guiding aims and objectives of the organisation will be followed. He also assured the advocates that legal practice on campus will take a new turn, towards ensuring effective legal representation of students on campus, without prejudice, discrimination or bias.
