Following the recent attacks on Universities in Northern Nigeria, the management of the University of Jos has directed that all hostels on the University’s campus should be closed.
Abdullahi Abdullahi, the Deputy Registrar (Information & Publication) disclosed this after a security meeting between the school management, the Directorate of Students’ Affairs, Students Union Government, Students Parliament, the University’s Security Division and external security agencies on Friday.
“The meeting deliberated on a Security Report regarding security threat to the University Staff, Students and properties. As a result of this, soft targets like the Hostels are in great danger,” he said.
Mr Abdullahi stated that “This is in the interest of the safety of students until all security measures have been perfected to protect the campuses as well as the hostels.”
However, the Deputy Registrar noted that the ongoing first-semester examinations will continue unhindered.
Ebenezer Iloadinma, public relations officer of the University’s Student Union Government told CAMPUS REPORTER, “There’s no deadline and the vacation of the hostel is not a compulsory order, the management wants to ensure that all security measures are put in place.”
It will be recalled that on Thursday three students of Capro Secondary Mission School at Gana Ropp, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State escaped from an armed gang that abducted them.
According to reports, four were taken by the armed group from the school but three of them escaped, while one remained in captivity.
The mission school, an arm of Calvary Ministries, is situated a few kilometres from the Yakubu Gowon airport and about 60 kilometres from the state capital, Jos.
Meanwhile, on Sunday evening three students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, were abducted and later released, six days after the abduction of Kaduna university students.
