As protesting students of the University of Benin insist on meeting with Vice-Chancellor Prof Lilian Salami in the VC’s official quarters, the Assistant Commissioner Of Police, Edo State Command, Badaru Musa, has called on the students to withdraw from their protest.
Mr Badaru, who spoke to the students in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence enjoined the chanting students to allow the school management to take appropriate action while maintaining that their demand has been noted by the school’s authority.
However, the students are unwilling to back down until the Vice-Chancellor addresses them.
On Tuesday the 14th of September, the students of the University of Benin took to the streets and corridors of the campus to protest against what they described as an ‘inconsiderate’ hike in school fees by N20,000.
In response, the institution’s leadership has ordered a temporary shut down of academic and non-academic activities within the school premises while directing all occupants to vacate the halls of residence on or before 12 pm on Wednesday, September 15. Still, the students have defied all odds and have continued with their peaceful demonstration.
As the students occupy the VC’s lodge, it is sending a strong message that the undergraduates have vowed not to suspend the protest until their demand is met.
Nevertheless, it remains uncertain if the students will get a favourable response from the school management any time soon.
