On Thursday, 15th July 2021 the management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Health Services Department, asked all the members of the university community to be careful and avoid snakes on the school’s main campus.
This was disclosed in an internal memorandum from the Department of Health Services, and signed by the Director of the Department, Dr Ibrahim Omar, who said that they have recorded several snake bite incidents on the main campus in the last two weeks.
The statement reads: “In the last two weeks we have recorded four (4) cases of snakebites on the main campus, by technical definition this constitutes an epidemic of snakebites.”
He, however, urged all the members of the University community to be careful of snakes and also advised all Heads of Departments to keep away materials that are not useful which could also serve as hiding places for the reptile.
“This is therefore to draw the attention of members of the university community, particularly those living or working on the main campus to be careful.
“Part of the measures to prevent snake bite is to keep rodents away from our houses and offices, unwanted materials that will serve as hiding places for snakes should be disposed of, in particular, we call on all Heads of Department to kindly dispose of unwanted tables, photocopy machines and other unserviceable equipment to the storehouse so as to avoid hiding places for dangerous reptiles in the offices and around the buildings,” it reads.
The University management also revealed its proactive actions to curtail the epidemic, and also pledged the readiness of the university’s clinic to attend to any victim within the campus.
“The university management on its part is using snake repellants around vulnerable areas of the campus to keep away snakes. The emergency lines for the clinic: 08162298436, 08136967449 and 07081278898 are always at your service in case of an emergency within the campus,” it stated.
