UDUS’ History-Making Medical Graduate

Despite the difficulty in graduating as a student of Medicine in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and juggling of academics with extra-curricular activities, Nafiu Abdulsalam bagged numerous awards on his induction day into the medical profession.

Nafiu Abdulsalam, who hails from Sokoto state, has bagged 13 awards in the just-concluded Induction of 2019 UDUS Medical Graduates into the medical profession which was held at Ginginya Coral Hotel, Sokoto state, on the 2nd of November 2020.

The College of Health Sciences in UDUS inducted 58 medical graduands, MBBS class 2019. His hard work and dedication have earned him great feats ranging from bagging the award of the best student in Anatomy, and the best student in Medical Microbiology.

He also won the award of the best student in Pathology, Pharmacology, Basic Clinical Sciences, the best student in Medicine, overall best graduating doctor, Dr Anas Sabir’s award for the Best Graduating Doctor and NMA’s award for the Best Graduating Doctor.

While on campus, he was a one-time Assistant Secretary of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Medical Student Association (UDUMSA), Director of the Standing Committee on Medical Education and Health, and also a member of numerous committees until his final year.

He has also partaken in numerous quizzes and competitions which include the UDUMSA quiz competition that came second in the maiden NMA regional quiz competition, and he was also among the team that represented Sokoto state when they won the interstate competition in 2016.

Abdulsalam, who felt delighted for achieving this accomplishment, disclosed that his hard work and persistence towards reading at night made him one of the most celebrated icons on their induction day.

“Well, I knew it would make me and my family happy so I strived hard for it. And I knew I had the capabilities to do it, I had friends that always advise me and motivate me in my academic journey,” he said.

He, however, advised the undergraduate students who have the intention to achieve this feat to be focused and should abstain from imitating their colleagues in reading, noting that understanding oneself is one of the ways in achieving great victory in one’s academics.

”If you are going to mimic someone, better do it in your way. Don’t force yourself to be someone else,” he advised.

Nevertheless, he revealed that his major challenges as a student were the ability to juggle his academics with extra-curricular activities while on campus.
