A community leader, Mustapha Nasiru, who is currently the Baale Owode of Osogbo in Osun State has bagged 12-month imprisonment for defrauding a cleric.
The 50-year-old community leader was sentenced on Monday by an Osogbo magistrate’s court for defrauding Adeyeye Jesutoki, a prophet of Celestial Church of God of N650,000.
Mr. Nasiru was arraigned on April 20, 2017 on a three-count charge bothering on fraud, stealing and threat to life in which he pleaded not guilty. He was then granted bail in the sum of 100,000 with two sureties.
The prosecutor, Taiwo Adegoke, an inspector, said the convict committed the offence sometimes in May 2016 at Owode area, Osogbo, with the intention of selling two plots of land located at Owode area to the prophet.
“The convict deceived the complainant and collected N650,000 from him knowing fully that the land did not belong to him,” said the prosecutor. “He even threatened to kill the complainant when he asked for his money.”
The prosecutor said that the offence committed contravened sections 419, 390(9), and 86 of the criminal code cap 34 volume 11 laws of Osun State, 2003.
The convict was found guilty of two charges by the magistrate. Each of the charges attracted 12-month jail term, the magistrate ruled. But the convict is to serve the terms concurrently.
