A former student of The Polytechnic Ibadan, Ahmed Olalekan, has been killed by suspected cultists.
CAMPUS REPORTER gathered that before his death on Monday, Mr Olalekan belonged to an anti-cultism group, The Polytechnic Ibadan Students Forum, comprising of current and former students of the institution.
The ex-student was reportedly axed to death in his apartment at Apete area in Ibadan.
Spokesman of the students’ forum, Adeyemi Ridwan, who spoke with our correspondent. blamed the institution’s authority for the tragedy saying they did not act to preempt the strike by the cult members.
“We got the call while watching Manchester United match on Monday that our man was killed by Aye (confraternity) members,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police spokesperson, Adekunle Ajisebutu in a text message sent to CAMPUS REPORTER said the situation has been brought under control adding that some persons have been arrested.
“The situation has been brought under control following immediate deployment of policemen to maintain law and order there. Some arrests have been made and exhibits such as axes and cutlasses recovered. The State CP, Abiodun Odude, has directed that discrete investigation into the incident be carried out and suspects arrested be charged to court,” Mr Ajisebutu said.
Efforts to get a reaction from the institution’s management were unsuccessful.
The Rector, Tunde Fawole, did not respond to calls and text messages sent to him by CAMPUS REPORTER on the allegations raised by the students’ forum.
