On Friday, 13th November, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will slug it out with their Sierra Leonian counterparts in the qualifiers for the 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The biennial tournament earlier scheduled for 2021 was postponed to 2022 because of the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide.
In June 2020, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament had been postponed from January 2021 to January 2022. The Friday match, which is the Matchday 3 alongside Matchday 4 of the qualifiers, was initially scheduled for March 2020 but were postponed indefinitely. In August, CAF, however, announced November for the resumption of the soccer events.
Nigeria and Sierra Leone in Group L, together with the Benin Republic and Lesotho started their qualification campaign with Match Day 1 on 13th November 2019 when Lesotho held Sierra Leone to a one-all draw at National Stadium in Freetown while Nigeria beat the Benin Republic side by two goals to one at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. Five days later on 17th November 2019, Match Day 2 which was played hosted in Mesaru, Lesotho, saw Nigeria defeating the host by two goals to four. Sierra Leone similarly suffered a defeat from their host, Benin Republic, on the same day.
Friday, November 13th 2020 will be Match Day 3 for Nigeria and Sierra Leone. This will see Nigeria play host to the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City in Edo State. Matchday 4 which is a rematch will see Sierra Leone playing host to Nigeria on 17th November.
Currently, Nigeria tops Group L with Maximum 6 points from two matches, Benin Republic is second with 3 points while Lesotho and Sierra Leone occupy the third and fourth position respectively, both having a point each. The best two teams will qualify for the tournament to be hosted in 2022 in Cameroon.
