The Oye-Ekiti Town in Ekiti State is teeming with criminalities as population rises in the community that host the Federal University of Oye, FOUYE, students have told CAMPUS REPORTER.

The students, interviewed by this newspaper, expressed security fears, lamenting a growing spate of robbery and sexual abuses. These were a rarity in the community until recently, they said.

According to some victims, the most vulnerable areas are Temidire/Fallex, Egbe, Oye-Egbo junction along green hostel road, Irare, St.Michael primary school and some places.

“I was passing through St. Michael Primary School at around 6:30 am on Wednesday, May 29, 2018, when two guys approached me, one holding a stick while the other stretch his hands out for a shake saying how ‘far?’,” said Adeleke Adeyemi, student.

“Immediately, I shook the guy, he grabbed me by my trousers and asked me to drop the bag on me with a slap, while the other started using the stick he was holding to beat me. After my bag had been released to them, they still didn’t want to let me go. The guy holding the stick attempted to beat me on the chest but I managed to escape by overpowering the one holding me.”.

Another student, a resident of Oye-Egbo, Adebayo Toluwanimi, said: “on the last Sunday of April 2018. I was coming back from the church, I boarded a bike from church around 8 pm. On getting close to my hostel (green hostel), the bike man said that he ran out of fuel. So, I dropped and gave him N200. Since I was close to my hostel already, I then requested my change. He requested that I should turn on my phone flashlight, which I did. Immediately, he brought out a gun, collected my phone, bible, jotter and zoomed off.”

Similar experiences were also narrated by various other students.

Our findings revealed that the only Police station close to Oye is located in Ilupeju, a nearby village.

The police spokesperson for Ekiti State, Adeyemi Ademola, withheld comment on this report. He did not answer calls placed to him. Similarly, he did not reply a text sent to him.
