The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Shagali has resigned from his position.
Rt. Hon. Shagali, representing Sabon Gari constituency, tendered his resignation before the commencement of the Assembly’s plenary session on Tuesday.
In a letter addressed to the Clerk of the House, Rt. Hon. Shagali revealed that he resigned on “personal grounds.”
Following the development, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani (Igabi West Constituency) has emerged as the new Speaker, while Hon. Mukhtar Isa Haro (Bassawa Constituency) was elected as Deputy Speaker.
Confirming the development to the press, Chairman House Committee on Information, Hon. Tanimu Musa revealed that the Rt. Hon. Shagali had “honourably tendered his resignation letter.”
He added that the ex-speaker would continue his normal duties as a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
The Speaker’s resignation is said to stem from alleged moves by some members to impeach him. However, this could not be independently verified by this reporter.
The former speaker, Rt. Hon. Shagali was elected as a Member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly in 2011 and has been Speaker since 2015.
