One student, identified as Oluwaseyi Kehinde in 100L Crop Science and Horticulture, has been confirmed dead following a protest by FUOYE students over the lack of power supply. Three others, Okonofua Joseph, Azeez Elijah and Olamilekan Abdulmuiz, were also critically injured during the protest.
The protest, which started out peacefull,y turned bloody when policemen guarding the governor’s wife’s convoy shot at students.
According to a source who refused to divulge his identity, the issue started when a security man slapped the SUG president, leading to an altercation between students and the police.
According to witnesses, the counter-terrorism unit officer (CTU) ran for safety to avoid being lynched by the angry students.
The aggrieved students took to the street when security operatives started chasing them and responded by throwing stones at their attackers. The police, in turn, responded by shooting at the students resulting in one death and three critically injured students, including a student who was shot in the eye.
Additionally, one security operative was reportedly beaten by students in reaction to the death of their fellow student, Kehinde.
