The National Association of Nigeria Students’ Joint Campus Committee (NANS JCC) Ekiti Axis, elected its new Chairman and other executives on the 2nd of July 2019 in a convention held at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The union aims to unite all the higher institutions in Ekiti State as well as discuss matters affecting them in order to proffer possible solutions.
The schools under this body include the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State University, Federal Polytechnic Ado, College of Education Ikere and College of Science and Health Technology, Ijero.
In attendance at the convention were the past chairman, student leaders, student union presidents of each school involved, who were identified as senators, the other executive bodies, stakeholders, comrades and other student activists.
While addressing students present after the election, the elected chairman of the students association, Ogunleye Abiola Johnson from Ekiti State University, promised to work diligently in promoting the interests of the Union among its peers, as well as “to restore the power and the beauty of students unionism in Ekiti State will be our priority.”
Also, the former NANS JCC Ekiti Axis Treasurer, Raji Sobur Kewulere from Federal University Oye-Ekiti who ran for and won the position of Vice President, pledged to continue his work in pursuit of the students’ interest at all levels from where the last administration stopped.
Other posts were won by Lasisi Ojo Samuel, a student of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, who emerged as the Director of Campus Affairs, while Moshood Abiola from the Federal Polytechnic, Ado emerged as the new NANS Treasurer.
Speaking with the UCJ FUOYE, the convention chairman, Shina Awopeju, assisted by the Clerk, Adedigba Modupe Mary, (EKSU SUG vice president) explained that NANS is a national body that includes the federal, state and local bodies.
“The Joint Campus Committee is for the state and all the tertiary institutions in the state automatically belong to NANS. All the SUG presidents are senators under NANS. So, if there are agitations from the students that are beyond the capacity of the SUG government or there are external forces by the government or private sector, NANS comes in to play,” he explained.
The outgoing chairman of the association, Olomosola Olubunmi, advised the new executives to ensure they move the association forward. He said there must be a huge difference between what his administration has achieved and what they achieve.
“There are challenges coming your way as you take the mantle today but you need to be focused. It is not an easy task, but don’t be moved by the storm,” he said.
Finally, he concluded by stating that the new team should learn from his experiences at the hands of the government during his tenure.
