The Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, has advised newly admitted students to make determined efforts to succeed in their academics.
He gave this advice on Monday the 19th of April 2019 at the University’s matriculation ceremony which was held at the Amphitheater, Oduduwa Hall.
He congratulated the 6,650 fresh students who were admitted out of the 37,059 that applied through the institution’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
In his statement, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the university has been able to produce satisfactory and qualitative manpower as well as expert graduates who meet the needs of both the nation and the international community in all fields.
He appealed to them to maintain the standard of knowledge and intellectual excellence the school has been known for globally.
Speaking further, he asked the students to focus on their studies by combining academic excellence with culture in a challenging, competitive and diverse academic environment– Our Africa’s Most Beautiful Campus.
Ogunbodede also advised them to learn from their qualified, competent and resourceful lecturers and seek counsel from the right channels, especially, from the Division of Students Affairs and the University’s Health Centre.
Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor advised them to keep away from colleagues who might want to lure them into any form of immorality and other forms of social vices.
“The university seriously frowns against all forms of anti-social behaviours that are capable of disrupting the smooth running of its academic calendar. Therefore, we implore you to desist from anti-social displays.”
Concluding his speech, Mr Ogunbodede reiterated the university’s zero tolerance policy for cultism, examination malpractice, violent behaviour, flagrant disregard to constituted authority and sexual harassment.
In an interview with Ayodeji Aduloju, a newly admitted student from the Department of Political Science, he affirmed his belief in OAU being a great institution for great minds willing to make great things.
“The OAU has been my dream school from the onset, I love OAU and I’ll make sure I make my parents proud and one day make OAU proud both at national and international level.”
Speaking with another student, Ayandokun Tolulope, a 100L student from the Department of English, he said he loves OAU and he has always loved to be a student of OAU.
“Although I applied for Law, I had to change my course to English when Law lost its accreditation. I hope the accreditation issue is resolved soon so other people who are willing to study Law, especially in OAU, can have the opportunity. Nevertheless, I’m happy that I’m now in OAU, whether Law or English,” he noted.
