Inspired by his cousin’s condition, Seyi Ojelabi, a member of Google Developers Group (GDG), Ogbomosho, and a 300 level student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho recently created a device called See-Tok for blind people.
See-Tok was first thrust into the limelight when Seyi visited the Nigeria Training Centre for the Blind in Ogbomosho, where he successfully tested the device. A glove-like tech device, See-Tok, was created to help the visually impaired find their way when moving and also to help them avoid collision with obstacles.
Explaining how it works, the Computer Science Student said the glove-like device is fixed to the hand, and it vibrates as soon as it senses an obstacle. Also, there is a built-in voice that says “stop” to enhance its work further. With this technique, accidents caused by collisions are avoided. “This way,” he said, “blind people will be able to make their way around safely.”
Seyi started programming in 100 Level, and even though he had no laptop at the time, he worked hard on various projects of his own. Having sensed the trauma his visually impaired cousin was going through because she had incapacities and couldn’t do many of the things she wanted, Seyi made up his mind to help.
Working solo during the corona break, he ordered the hardware online and then worked on the necessary codes required; Seyi was able to create See-Tok, which he has been testing. When talking to the CAMPUS REPORTER, Seyi mentioned that he had worked on a number of projects before, as a group member, and had other projects of his own, on the side. However, the See-Tok was his favourite one so far, because it was created to make an impact and affect life for a key demographic of society positively.
When asked about his plans for the device, Seyi told this reporter he hoped to improve the device and make it more sophisticated. In his words, “If I die today, I want to be remembered for something great. I want my work to be in existence for every blind person worldwide.”
