The Students’ Union of Kwara State University, Malete, held its annual leadership summit at Kwara Hotel Ilorin on Wednesday the 30th of September. The programme is aimed at educating and enlightening students on the importance of quality education towards effective leadership.
The programme featured many dignitaries including Prof. Muhammad Mustapha Akanbi, Barrister Kunle Sulyman, Commissioner of Tertiary institution, Prof. Mashood Jimba, Doctor Mahfouz A. Adedimeji, Mallam Lanre -Issa Onilu, Comrade Phodeo, Comrade Wiskiu, Union leaders from Unilorin and College of Education Ilorin and Kwara State University union representatives and many others.
The auspicious programme started at exactly 10 am in the morning with encomium and enthusiasm beginning which was anchored by the handsome presenter in the person of Mr Basheer Luqman Olarewaju. The order of events was brilliantly organised, capturing the attention of the overall attendees from the beginning until the end.
The overall event was done in honour of the renowned business tycoon and compassionate humanitarian in the person of Alhaji Sheriff Sagaya, the Founder of Salman Shagaya Foundation, ably represented by Honourable Baakini. He also showed his high spirited capacity towards contributing in kind to humanity by donating a sum of two million Naira to appreciate the Committee for finding him in honour of that.
In his appreciation’s speech, he said: “I am so happy for the honour brought to me by my social intervention to the community and I will ensure that such sustainable impacts continue so that poverty will run an exile in our society. I also challenge you students that education is beyond attending classes but to learn skills that are sellable and impacting lives of others through volunteering.”
The invited guest, Dr Mahfouz Adedimeji, a distinguished lecturer from the University of Ilorin delivered a very well resounding, educative and enlightening lecture with versed relevant quotes correlating with the topic of discussion. He gave a well-detailed account between schooling and education and as well as leadership and rulership among others. He advised the well-meaning learner to think beyond the certificate but quality education which will be a key to many doors of impossibilities outside the school.
Also, in an interview section with Rofiat Alaya, a 300 level student of public health science of Kwasu expressed that her monumental stint in her time at the event was noteworthy and breathtaking. “I am happy that I was here today,” she said. In another interview section with the Students’ Union President of College of Education Ilorin, he also expressed his heartfelt thoughts on how impactful the event was to him as a student leader.
Finally, after much engagement from different angles, the award of excellence was given to those selected. The awards were warmly embraced and Mrs Modibo Kawu, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education. Speaking, she said: “Kwasu students, I am proud of you.”
