Jaw-war competition ends at UI
On Thursday, the Trenchard Hall of the University of Ibadan was filled to the brim as students from different faculties and halls of residence in the University witnessed the school’s public speaking event in Nigeria know as ‘Jaw war’.
The final of Jaw-War Public Speaking Competition was included as part of the activities marking the 70th anniversary of the institution.
The final competition which was between Faculties of Law and Education as well as between Sultan Bello Hall and Lord Tedder Hall of residence saw Faculty of Education and Bello Hall win respectively.
The event had in attendance the university administrators led by the Vice Chancellor, Idowu Olayinka, who was the Chairman of the occasion. The Vice-Chancellor commended the students for their intellectual activities climaxing with the four finalists slugging it out.
Mr Olayinka who donated some laptops for the champions of the game and promised that his administration would continue to support the students in their quest for academic excellence.
The Guest of Honour, Ceroy Edozien, who was a 1974 alumnus and Public Relations Officers of the Students’ Union urged the students to be the leaders today before tomorrow comes, pointing out that “a speaker today is a leader tomorrow”.
Mr Edozien who admonished students to be of good behaviour advised against being pessimistic and sarcastic about Nigeria.
At the end of the speaking competition, Faculty of Education defeated Law while Bello hall beat Tedder hall of residence.
The Speakers were Ayomide Yekeen, Dikibo Apollos, representing Tedder hall while Osoko Emmanuel and Okunlola Festus for Sultan Bello. Ayeni OtitoJesu Joshua and Jummah Mujeeb represented Education Faculty while Adesokan Adediran and Temijuopelo James spoke on behalf of Faculty of Law.
Various prizes were later presented to those who distinguished themselves in different areas of the competition.
