(Islamic New Year) Muharram: Muslim Ummah Should Prioritize our Sacred Month

The month of Muharram indicates the beginning of the new Islamic year and is the first month in the Islamic calendar. It is a month of virtue and blessings to all the Muslims Ummah.

Muharram means ‘sacred’ and is among the four months that have been regarded as a sacred month in the holy Quran  Qur’an:{9 V 36) says:

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months [in a year], so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…”

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) narrates:

“The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: [These are] the three consecutive months of Dhu al-Qa’dah, Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram, and [then] Rajab which comes between Jumada and Sha’ban.” {Bukhari}

The beginning of the Islamic New Year is marked by the new moon sighting at sunset. This is the sacred month in which Muhammad emigrated from Makkah to Madinah (A.D. July 16, 622). The arrival of the new moon signifies the beginning of the auspicious month of Muharram.

The Islamic calendar has four holy months and Muharram is considered to be one of them after Ramadan, according to the Islamic lunar calendar. Muharram also marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala, where the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Imam Hussain ibn Ali was killed.

Whether Muslims are celebrating the beginning of the Islamic New year or lamenting the loss of life of the Battle of Karbala, where the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Imam Hussain ibn Ali was killed.

It’s very imperative to let you know that Muharram is a valuable and holy month for everyone. It’s advisable for every Muslims to fast in this holy month and give extra prayers for all those who have sacrificed their lives, properties, families, for the upholding of this Ummah during the lifetime of the noble prophet.

Let us always put it in mind that this month stands for two things, a month of mourning and a month of excitement. Let’s embrace our Islamic year and abandons putting a priority on gregorian month (January) over Muharram.

The first of Muharram is expected to be celebrated with the remembrance of Sohabbatul-Nabiyy (Successors of the Prophet) who migrated from Makkah to Madinah with Prophet Muhammad. Let’s pray for them for all their efforts towards ensuring that Islam spread throughout the world. Hijjirrah is our year, let’s stop following the Gregorian calendar which is the first of January.

It’s so saddening that the majority of the Muslims don’t even know that there’s a month called ‘Muharram’ not to talk of knowing it’s the importance and some expected good in it.  The religious leaders are not also helping matters, some of these religious leaders will organize prayer on the first of January, but if it’s Muharram, they wouldn’t care of even announcing to the people that the new year for Muslim Ummah has arrived, not to talk of organizing prayer.

Similarly, organizing a prayer on the first or second day of this month is very paramount to start our new year in order to let us achieve all our aims and objectives we were unable to attain in the previous year.

If the first of January comes, you would see Muslims greeting one another with Happy New Year, they will cook special food and mark the day as a special day of the year. Not only that, but you will also see our Muslim brothers and sisters who will leave their houses and be going here and there for prayer tagging it to be celebrating the new year (January), whereas, the reverse is the case in Muharram.

What is happening to Muslim Ummah? Why don’t we put a priority on our own Hijjira calendar over the gregorian calendar? If you ask a Muslim about the hijrah date, the answer will be Ohh! I don’t know. This act has become so prevalent in our contemporary society, most especially in Nigeria.

Let’s prioritize our natural gift from Allah, let’s enlighten the upcoming generations to know the significance of our Islamic month. Let’s keep praying for those who have sacrificed their lives for Islam.

Let me also remind you that Muharram is celebrated as the advent, foundation, inception, and derivation of the Islamic New Year by participating Muslims around the globe. It is regarded as a pious, conscientious, and important festival by the Muslim Ummah.

Muharram is one of the most important months for Muslims and marks the start of the Islamic New year; Muharram with all of its complexity will always be a month of deep reflection for Muslims across the globe.

Happy New Year to all my Muslim brothers and sisters. May we witness more of this on earth. Amen.

Allah Knows Best.
