A 300L student of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) was pronounced dead on Tuesday the 8th of June 2021 at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri.

The deceased, identified as Ezeamadi Augustus, (popularly known as Musa) reportedly slumped in the late hours of Tuesday in front of Hostel C, after which he was rushed to the University Health Centre.

He was later transferred from the University Health Centre to the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri where he was confirmed dead.

The deceased was gunning for the post of the Director of Transport of the University’s Student Union Government (SUG) and is thought to have been at the Hostel for his normal election campaign.

Following the death of Ezeamadi Augustus on Tuesday, two other students have also slumped in two different locations within the same University. While a student slumped at hostel D, the other lost consciousness along the road leading to the School of Management Technology (SMAT). The two students have been rushed to the University Health Centre and are both in stable condition.

The medical doctor at the Health Centre advised the students present that they should eat healthy foods so as to keep their body’s sugar level stable.

However, the students of the University staged a protest on the University campus on Wednesday 9th of June, 2021 demanding adequate health care and proper health facilities from the management of the institution. The students complained about various problems they face at the University Health Centre amongst which include the failure of the University to provide an ambulance as well as the lackadaisical attitude of the workers in the clinic. They also vowed that the institution would be shut down if their demands are not met as they cannot continue to lose their friends and colleagues to poor health care.

The management of the University addressed the protesting students and promised that their demands will be met and that they are doing everything possible to improve the welfare of the students with support from the government and private organisations.

The Student Union leaders also promised that they will follow up with the management until it is executed by the University’s management.
