The management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA) has described the death of Adeyinka Daniel, a 200 level student of the institution, as unfortunate and regrettable.
The institution, in a press statement signed by the Registrar, Mr Richard Arifalo, on the 3rd of August, 2021, commiserated with the family of the late student.
It was earlier reported by Campus Reporter that the late Adeyinka Daniel and four other students had an accident in the early hours of this morning in Akure. This led to a protest over the nonchalant attitudes of the health centre and security unit personnel of the school.
In the press release, the management of the school explained how the incident happened and what transpired from available information received by management.
Part of the statement reads:
“From available information, the deceased student along with others were involved in an accident outside the campus around 10 PM on August 2, 2021. They were first taken to a private hospital where doctors battled to save their lives. Four of the students were stabilized but Daniel’s condition remained critical. When the condition of the student deteriorated the doctor at the Private Hospital referred him to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo for expert intervention.”
It says the health data received from a private hospital alongside before the death of the student showed he was clinically non-responsive before he got to the University premises.
“At that time the parents of the student and some relations had joined him at the Private Hospital and it was decided, because of the time factor, to bring him to the University Health Centre. The deceased student was brought to the University Health Centre at 3.20 AM and the doctor on duty promptly attended to the student in the care of the parents. According to him, all resuscitative efforts proved abortive; there was no cardiac activity and response to any stimuli. And by 3.40 AM he declared that he was brought in clinically dead. The doctor offered to take the boy to the morgue with the University Ambulance but the parents declined to elect to take him home ostensibly for burial.”
“The Medical report from the Private Hospital which was brought along with him indicates that the student was clinically non-responsive by 1.30 AM well before they got to the University Health Centre at 3:20 AM.”
The management of the school has however ordered that immediate action be taken to know and reveal the exact cause of his death and issues surrounding such.
The University also said inspection of the current state of health of other students involved in the accident is ongoing.
The school management through the Registrar said: “The University has ordered an immediate review of the incident in order to ascertain the circumstances leading to it.”
Mr Richard Arifalo, on behalf of the University, prayed to God to grant the family and loved ones of late Daniel the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
