The crucial role that a library plays in the quest for knowledge by learners can never be overemphasized. The library is a resource centre for learners. It is a place where learners are incubated and birthed. This is why as one of its requirements for the establishment and accreditation of a higher school, the Nigeria University Commission, NUC, states that a functional library among other things must be put in place for learners.
The current Federal University Oye-Ekiti library which cannot accommodate up to one hundred persons was built alongside pioneer structures in the university in 2011.
As the school is preparing for her second-semester exams the atmosphere in the library could be likened to the peculiar phenomenon of ‘survival of the fittest.’
The library is getting overcrowded and overstretched as many learners are scrambling for limited spaces available in it. It is now a first to come first served basis. Another noticeable concern in the library which has left learners stranded is that the books that were meant for the general consumption of learners have now been replaced with Law books as the initial temporary library has been changed to Faculty of Law’s library.
Two students from the faculty of science who do not want their names to be mentioned have the same views. They complained the library is too small and is not well organized. They said it does not give room for adequate research and want the university management to take an immediate step in providing a conducive place for learners to carry out their research.
Speaking to CAMPUS REPORTER on what his leadership is doing to address these ugly trends, the University Librarian, Gboyega Adio, said the main library which is located at Phase Three in the university has been completed but the contractor handling the project has not handed it over to the university. He said efforts are geared towards making sure it is handed over very soon.
As regards the removal of the general books, he said the action was taken because of the proposed Law library the university wants to use the place for. He said the books will be moved to the central library as soon it is handed over to his leadership.
