The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Debate Club recently held her 2021 Edition of Inter-faculty Debate and Public Speaking Championship, Campus Reporters can confirm.
The championship, which was organised in two streams—Debating and Public Speaking—began on Friday, July 30th and continued until Monday, August 2nd at the Theodore Ibiye Francis Auditorium.
The event tagged: “Barz and Brags” produced a new set of champions from the School of Computing as well as the School of Environmental Technology.
While Timilehin Olamijulo and Joshua Peter represented and bagged gold for the School of Computing in the debating segment, Abiola Abdul-Azeez equally bagged gold for the School of Environmental Technology in the public speaking segment.
Meanwhile, Happiness Omosuyi from the School of Earth and Mineral Sciences emerged second as Olajide Akinleye of the School of Management Technology became the overall best debate speaker and Akhabue Lofty Osennmare of the School of Sciences clinched the best new debaters’ award.
Speaking on the event, the FUTA Debate Club President, Temitope S. Akinmoladun asserted that the essence of the tournament is to create a bonding effect among participants and to promote critical thinking skills amongst students to solve issues of concern.
Temitope said: “The primary goal of creating such a tournament is to create a great bonding effect among participants and also to promote critical thinking skills of students towards solving local and global issues.”
Addressing the audience, the Chief Adjudicator for the tournament, Mr Adewale Adeife, urged members of the club and other prospective ones to stand dogged and committed to the debating styles and structure as there are lots of benefits to be accrued from them.”
The FUTA Debate Club tournament has been a regular event since 2015. And Prof. Funmilayo Olubode-Sawe is the Patron of the Club and Chairperson of the committee in charge of preparing students for National and International Competitions. She assures that the programme would be more exciting next year.
