Amidu Mohammed Dabban, a 400 level student of Education Chemistry has emerged as the Most Outstanding Participant at the just-concluded 35th Edition of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award for District 9110.
The Rotary Youth Leadership Award is an initiative of Rotary International to encourage the development of teamwork and leadership skills in young people who have the potential to be future community professionals and business leaders.
This edition of the Leadership Award, which took place at Iyana Paja NYSC Camp in Lagos state, lasted for six days where passionate young minds across the country were equipped with leadership and entrepreneurship skills.
For his outstanding performance in the program, Amidu, an indigene of Niger State, was awarded a gold medal, DSTV satellite dish and a N100,000 business grant for his plastic waste recycling business idea.
Speaking with CAMPUS REPORTER, Amidu explained that his proactiveness and entrepreneurial mindset distinguished him from other participants.
“What I think distinguishes me from others is my proactive nature and my entrepreneurial mindset, I don’t go anywhere without my business card, because you meet people every day. At the camp, I was always wanting to get involved in one activity or the other even with my health condition. The officials always try to stop me but I was persistent especially during morning duties, I was reported to the course officer but it is part of me and they had to leave me to my normal [altruistic self].
“Achieving this stride came unexpectedly because it was the last thing I expected since I wasn’t a registered member of district9110. But according to the District Governor I surprised him with my entrepreneurial spirit and coming all the way from Sokoto to be the best rylarian of the year got him wowed,” he added.
He further advised his fellow students to be creative and innovative as this will enable them to be self-employed and create employment for others.
“To my fellow students, the truth and fact still remain [that] your degree won’t feed you, it will only distinguish you from others if you are smart and creative. Create jobs and don’t look for jobs because there are no jobs. Your course of study doesn’t decide who you become but your decision does.”
