Bayern Munich finally got its hands on the Champions League trophy for the first time in seven years as they won the competition for the sixth time in the club’s history, after beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. Both teams have won their leagues and the domestic cup competition this season with a very strong campaign in the Champions League. However, it was Bayern that came out on top.
Thomas Tuchel was able to bring Keylor Navas back into the starting lineup for PSG, returning from injury, while Hansi Flick benched Ivan Perišić for Kingsley Coman in the Bayern lineup. It was a tense first half with both sides giving each other little opportunity to get a goal-scoring chance. Neymar had the first key chance of the match but had his shot saved by Manuel Neuer in quick succession. Àngel Di Maria had a massive opportunity to get PSG in front, as the Argentine was laid a chance from 10 yards but blazed his shot above the crossbar. Bayern’s attack hardly had any chances to hurt the Parisians as they handled the likes of Lewandowski, Müller, and Gnarby well while Bayern was forced to make an early change with Niklas Süle coming on for Jerome Boateng, who left injured. Kylian Mbappé had a massive chance to take PSG into the lead just before halftime scuffed his shot straight at Neuer as the game was scoreless at the break.
The second half continued where the first left off with both sides being cautious. There was a fierce challenge from Serge Gnarby on Neymar which created an altercation between Gnarby and Leandro Paredes, resulting in both players being booked. Bayern eventually went in front just before the hour mark as Joshua Kimmich found Kingsley Coman in the penalty box with the Frenchman heading the ball past Keylor Navas to give the Bavarians the lead. Both sides made changes but PSG had a chance to level the score when Marquinhos shot at the near post but was saved by Neuer. With time running away for PSG, they needed to find something to get level the score and fast. With little time remaining, PSG brought on Eric Choupo-Moting, who missed a chance but was called offside. Neymar tried to influence the game late on but to no prevail as the game finished 1-0, with Bayern winning the Champions League trophy.
Alongside winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal this season, Bayern Munich has won a treble of trophies for the second time in the club’s history. The last team they achieve this feat was back in 2013 as they bulldozed everyone towards every major honour that season. For PSG, it’s whether they can build on this Champions League run as they have never played in a Champions League before now. Nine years since the Qatari takeover, they nearly touched the summit but fell at the final hurdle. They will be back in action very soon as the 2020/2021 Ligue 1 season is already underway.
