“The Media and several Civil Society Organisations play a huge role in bringing public awareness to certain aspects of government, which, in turn, enable the eradication of corruption from society.”
This statement was made by one of the facilitators from the Rule of Law and Anti Corruption group, Dr Ada Ameh during her opening remarks at the ‘Government, CSOs and Media Dialogue on Implementation of the Anambra State Anti-corruption Strategy and Anambra State Justice Sector Reform Team’s 2019 Action Plan.’
While speaking, Dr Ameh noted that one of the objectives of the program is to provide platforms for Civil Society Organisations and media organisations to outline results-monitoring strategies to implement the priority actions.
The training, which is organised by Rule of law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC), funded by the European Union and managed by the British Council, is currently ongoing at Chicotel Hotel, Awka for invited media personnel and Civil Society Organisations.
During the discussion, which focused on the way the media can be more effective in reducing the rate of corruption, a few solutions were proffered. These solutions included the monitoring and tracking of budget, training journalists, re-enforcing anti-corruption themes, establishing anti-corruption clubs in schools, sensitisation of the public and more.
The event, which has over twenty media practitioners and Civil Society Organisations from different parts of the state will end on Friday, the 10th of May, with a dialogue with the Anambra State Government on ways the recommendations made, can be implemented.
