Following the alarming number of accidents on Akungba road in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, which has claimed the lives of students of Adekunle Ajasin University(AAUA) and indigenes, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ondo JCC axis has issued seven days ultimatum for the reinstatement of the barricade earlier erected by the Students’ Union of Adekunle Ajasin to prevent trailers from plying the road.
This was contained in a circular by the body, signed by its chairman, Comrade Omotoso Surprise and the General Secretary, Comrades Akinola Elijah Temitope.
The circular read: “Over the years, accidents on ever-busy Akungba Akoko road have been consistent and it has reached its peak. This unfortunately and avoidable have pushed students, commuters, and its inhabitants of the land, who are the primary victim of this virulent incursion, to the edge.
“As it will be Akungba Akoko is the host community of the first owned University in Ondo State, the Adekunle Ajasin University, of course, tens have been lost to the narrow road and reckless driving of lorries that are ever-present on the road.”
NANS added that many dreams and hopes of families and the country have been dashed due to the incessant accidents on the road, yet the government keeps mutes on the solutions to the plight.
While expressing their discontent with the removal of the barricades, they called on the government, traditional rulers, security agencies and the AAUA management to respond to the killing of the students.
However, the students union president of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Comrade Ogunsanmi Kolade, also known as Multiple, reiterated that trucks not be allowed to ply the road during the day, but can ply from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM in the morning.
Ogunsanmi Kolade made this known while speaking at the scene of the accident that claimed a life and left several injured yesterday, along Celestial Street, a few kilometres away from the erected barricade.
