I said my lecturers watch “inappropriate movies during office hours”, not pornography – UNIZIK VC

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has clarified the statement purportedly made by the Vice-chancellor of the school, Joseph Ahaneku, in respect of lecturers allegedly watching pornographic videos during office hours.

Report had emerged on the social media at the of the week that the Mr. Ahaneku said he was monitoring activities of the staff through his own network and discovered “over 40 per cent” of the lecturers were indulging in the unethical conduct of seeing pornography during office hours.

But in a statement, the spokesperson for the school, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the VC did not accuse the lecturers of watching pornographic video, and that the trending report on social media was targeted at “tarnishing the earned reputation of the school”.

However, he said mention was only made of “inappropriate videos”, among other acts of indiscipline.

“The vice chancellor and other senators at the senate meeting condemned truancy, lateness, and watching of ‘inappropriate videos’ including home movies during office hours,” Mr. Ojukwu said, adding that stating that there was no specific mention of any percentage of those watching these movies and also no such word as pornography was mentioned.”

He continued: “While the university appreciates the right of persons to spread information, distorted information is however injurious to society’s wellbeing.

“Therefore, we implore all staff, students, alumnis, and friends of our great university to please ignore this current machination of mischief makers whose only aim is to tarnish the hard earned reputation of our university.”
